Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
This was one of the most beautiful coming-of-age stories that I’ve ever read. The story follows Aristotle, a Mexican-American teenager who grapples with the different facets of his identity, along with his complex feelings for his close friend Dante, in the late 1980s. While this book is labeled as a YA, it arguably has a lot for adults to enjoy as well — especially the beautiful, poetic language that fully immerses and invests the reader in the story.
A Man Called Ove: A Novel by Fredrik Backman
For fans of curmudgeonly characters whose hearts slowly melt in the face of a ragtag band of misfits, this book is absolutely a must-read. Ove is a grumpy, lonely man who lives alone following a series of misfortunes; however, the introduction of a few new neighbors begins to change his perspective for the better. While sad in some places, this book takes the reader through a rollercoaster of laughter, tears, and warmheartedness and is one of my favorite reads of this year.
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
This spooky book follows Noemi, a young Mexican woman who travels to a disturbing mansion to check on her cousin, Catalina. Mexican Gothic follows the traditional Gothic formula of a haunting mansion, a strangely cold family, and a brooding young maiden — and then turns everything on its head with a truly horrifying twist. Although not a perfect book, I could hardly put this one down, and once it hits the climax the reader is trapped on an absolutely thrilling ride to the conclusion.

Olive, Again by Elizabeth Strout
Somehow, I completely missed the Elizabeth Strout train: This author won the Pulitzer in 2008? HBO adapted that prizewinning book, Olive Kitteridge, into an award-winning show (that sounded familiar, but I didn't watch)? Well, cut to the pandemic, and I've read three Strout books this year on my Kindle...concluding with Olive, Again, a sequel to the novel of interconnected, startlingly beautiful stories surrounding a community in Maine, with a heavy emphasis on the weird stoic, no-time-for-pleasantries heroine. In Olive, Again, we find Olive in the midst of an unexpected late-in-life rebirth. Did I cry reading Strout's description of the light in February as Olive forges the least likely of friendships? Yup.

Red Plenty by Francis Spufford
These days, our ability to buy basically anything is limited only by our bank accounts, so I find it faintly dizzying to consider that for most of human history most people couldn't buy anything except the most basic staples (if they were lucky). This novel traces the history of the Soviet Union’s “planned economy”, which I don't think you could have paid me to be interested in before I encountered this book, yet it managed to both keep me wildly entertained and reconsider how and why I spend money every time I buy the stuff I buy.

Untamed by Glennon Doyle
It's a weird time in the world. It's a weird time to be a woman. It's a weird time to go through a life transition. All of these perspectives are addressed in the memoir by Glennon Doyle, Untamed. The striking cover art might draw you in, but I highly recommend the Audible version. I wasn't a huge consumer of audio books until I started listening to memoirs read by their authors, and now that's the only way I'll read them. Hearing her story, in her voice, lends an authenticity to the reading experience and makes me feel like I'm having a heart-to-heart with a dear friend.
